Pussy, in ahrut nine cases out of ten, will come out of the scrap with colors flying, because ot the fact that it Is, apparently quite as quick in movement, nnd tin same time uses what may bo turni. ed ring generalship. i There Is but one animal other than the cat that successfully wages war upon the fer de lance. It is the "man gouste," (Ichneumon) Imported froaa India a number of years ago for the sole purpose of getting rid of the snakes. Of the weasel family and looking very much like It, this lltle animal la sbrolutely fearless so far as snakes ore concerned and will just as readily tackle one five (eet In length aa one a loot log.

From the "man gousta" the fer de lance will flee, but If cornered will put np a great fight, using every trick at Its command; a useless sort of contest, however, for within a short time It will be stretched out llfelees. A battle between these two natural enemies is well worth witnessing. It Is never a "liniltej" tight, but to a finish, always and probably the snakes by this time have come to understand Hint when they enter such a combat it Is with the odds against them. The J'man gouste" is quite as clever a ring general as the cat, and uses that gift to advantage. Strategy, more than ajiengtu, la its asset.

When tbey meet, and If the snake sees no avenue ot escape, It prepares tor battle as does the "man goute," but in a more leisurely manner. It takes about one minute for tbera to get fully prepared. There la no shaking bands, so to speak, as, do prize flffhters. THE "MAN METHOD.
