11, in Ozarks The Daily News Thursday, December 12, 1985 From Page 18 Motel manager Bob Wilson, who lives with his family at the south end of the building, said he awoke just before a passerby warned him. "About the time I got my pants on, there was a guy at the front door hollering that the roof wa's on fire," Wilson said. Wilson said he was upset because he had recently started remodeling some of the motel units. The motel's owner was identified as Fred Rosey of Kansas City, Wilson, however, said he reports on motel matters to Paul Johnson, whom he identified as a Springfield businessman. Sansom said he was unsure about who owns the motel.

that Cameron was the only community with organized opposition. They complained the decision was made without discussion about financial incentives offered by any of the three semifinalists. "All we knew was Cameron was not 100 percent in favor of the prison as Mount Vernon, Tipton and others were," Strong said. The committee refused a request by Rep. J.

Dan Woodall, R-Springfield, to reconsider Mount Vernon as a contender. The city was knocked out of contention by Ashcroft's panet. Woodall asked the committee to study Mount Vernon's offer of surplus state land for the site and availing able utilities. He said that city officials had not had enough time to make a complete proposal when they appeared before the governor's committee. Some local officials from other areas of the state that were rejected as sites for the prison said they felting the governor's committee kept Cameron on the list of three finalists because it is the hometown of House Speaker Bob Griffin.

Members of the committee have strongly disputed those accusations. The dissent about how Ashcroft has handled the prison selection was louder after the meeting. "This was a useless waste of time," said Rep. Gracia Backer, Bloomfield, who complained that lawD makers were given little input in selecting the prison. Webster said the governor wrongly assumed authority to choose a prison site, Ashcroft has said that he and ActPrison Director Dick Moore will make the final decision for the new prison site after Ashcroft's panel makes its recommendation.
