The Maldivian government hinted today it considers the revolution pro-British and linked It with the British' plans for an air base on Gan Island, headquarters of the rebel government. The rebel regime, calling itself "the United Suvadiva Islands," said the revolt had been sparked by starvation and high taxes and denied any outside influence. The Maldives, a cluster of 2.000 islands, are self-governing.

But under a treaty signed 72 years ago, they agreed to let Britain look after their foreign affairs and defense. Britain has run' into difficulties with the sultan, who rules the islands, over building the Royal Air Force base on Gan in the Addu atoll. The British want to set up the base an an important link in their defense line to Asia to replace the RAF base given up on Ceylon. The Maldivian' government denied, in a communique that there were hardships as charged by the rebels. "The present consequences are a natural sequel to the effects of the Maldivian government not conceding to every wish and request of the 'Brit-feli' government rewarding a base in Gan," it added.

i The five islands reportedly in the hands of the rebels are sparsely settled, with about 7,000 inhabitants engaged mostly in coconut plantations and fishing. The total population of all the Maldive Islands most of them uninhabitedis only 82,000. They are chiefly Moslems. The leader of the revolt was identified as Abdulla Afil'i Didi, whom the Maldivian government denounced as "a man who served a term of imprisonment in jail for plotting against 4he government during World War II." had gone through a marriage ceremony in Iowa one month, ago, told police he killed her because she had told him she planned a reconciliation with Harold.
