Leathem, 81, see obituary. George A. Wells George A. Wells, 65, of Springfield, passed away at 2:23 a.m. Sunday, August 8, 2004, in St.

John's Hospital. He was born January 13, 1939, in Stoutland, to Pete and Elizabeth A. Wells. George attended Senior High School and Drury University in Springfield. He served in the United States Marine Corps.

George was united in marriage to Linda Russell in 1981. He was preceded in death by his parents. George is survived by his wife, Linda Wells; three stepchildren, Jeff Russell, Janet Steinert, and Joe Russell; and four grandchildren. Private family services will be held at a later date under the direction of Gorman-Scharpf Brentwood Chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to American Cancer Society, 3322 S.

Jean Schad Jean Schad went home to be with her Lord Monday morning at Cox South Medical Center following a brief illness. She died with her family at her side, providing them with inspiring glimpses of the glorious hereafter that awaited her. Born at King's Prairie, near Verona, on September 20, 1928, to Fred and Laura Weber, Jean lived her entire life in the Monett-Purdy area. Prior to marrying Alvin Schad of Purdy on April 30, 1955, and becoming a house, wife and mother, Jean worked as a bookkeeper at Monett's Farmers' Exchange. Jean was a member of St.

John's Lutheran Church at Stone's. Prairie, where she active in Lutheran Women's Missionary also had a great Leagueiends at the Monett Senior Citizen's Center. Jean was a regular attendee for more than a decade, and she also served there as a volunteer. She is survived by her husband of 49 years, Alvin Schad; two children, Dennis Schad and Barbara George of Springfield; a son-in-law, Charlie "Rich" George of Springfield; and Lila Schad of Springfield, her sister. Also surviving here are three grandchildren and five greatgrandchildren.

Arrangements are under the direction of Bennett-Wormington of Monett. Visitation is scheduled for Wednesday from to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church in Stone's Prairie with burial to follow in the church cemetery.

Truman Boulevard ADAMS Nixa, MO 65714 (417) 724-2400 FUNERAL HOME Three Generations of Family Service Michael Lee Bryan, age 37, of Ozark, passed away Sunday, August 8, 2004, in St. John's Hospital, Springfield. He was born August 13, 1966, the son of Basel and Beulah (Stewart) Bryan. In 1987, he and Sondra Kay Anderson were united in marriage.

He worked with the Christian County Road Department. Michael's grandbaby and his girls were the joy of his life. He also enjoyed riding his Harley, and was always quick to help people when needed. Survivors include his wife, Sondra; three daughters, Jamie Anderson, Nickie Bryan and Cheyenne Ozark; a granddaughter, Kailey Anderson; his parents, Basel and Beulah Bryan, Ozark; a grandmother, Elsie Bryan, Ozark; two sisters, Vickie Green, Ozark, and Brenda Mitchell, Ponce de Leon; nieces; nephews; and many friends. He was preceded in death by a sister, Becky Teague; and grandparents, Webb Bryan, and Richard and Clista Stewart.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in Adams Funeral Home, Nixa, with Joe Evans officiating. Burial will follow in Jones-Chastain Cemetery, south of Nixa. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home.

on Sundays. p.m, Visit News- Malcolm Sherwood Malcolm Sherwood was born July 14, 1909, in Toledo, Ohio, to George Washington Sherwood Lucille Mae O'Connor, and died at his home August 7, 2004, in Springfield, Mo. He married Virginia Dolores Grisham on December 16, 1933, in Hannibal, and two children were born to this union. He worked for Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. in Hannibal and Louisiana, Missouri, as a lineman and In 1943, he enlisted in the United States Navy and graduated from the U.S.

Navy underwater demolition school at Fort Pierce, Florida. He attained rank of Master Chief Petty Officer and was honorably discharged from active duty in 1945. In March of 1948, he and his wife purchased and comanaged the telephone company in Branson and surrounding communities, eventually renaming it Twin Lakes Telephone Company. They were instrumental in the expansion of telephone service to the communities of Branson, Forsyth, Hollister, Reeds Spring, as othRockaway Beachell Ozark, er towns in the Taney, Stone, and Christian counties. In 1962, after a long career in the communication business, they sold their interest to Continental Telephone Co.

In late 1963, he moved ed to Buffalo, where he engaged in a cattle and hog farming operation in northeast Dallas county. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Virginia, in 1979; both parents; a stepfather, Harry Crance; and a stepson, Maurice George. On August 3, 1981, he married Loretta W. Calton, and they later moved to Springfield. He is survived by his wife, Loretta; one son, Devon F.

Sherwood of Springfield; one daughter, Kimberley Duggan and husband, Marvin, of Buffalo; three granddaughters, Melissa Mann, Jennifer Schneider, and Dr. Leslie Sherwood; two grandsons, Sherwood and Marc Duggan; two great-granddaughters, Morgan and Taylor; two great-grandsons, Hayden and Ryan; a stepdaughter, Gloria Cobb and husband, Tom, and son, of Republic; and one stepson, Keith Calton, of the state of Texas. It was his decision to be cremated and no service is planned at this time. Arrangements under direction of Meadors Funeral Homes, Republic. John's Hospice. Alice G. Leathem Alice G. Leathem, age 81, of Savannah Court, Oviedo, died Friday, August 6, in Florida Hospital East Orlando. Alice was born in Tina, Missouri, and had resided i in Mt.

Vernon before moving to Central Florida in January 2004. She was a retired health care giver and a member of Christ Chapel Church. She loved the outdoors and fishing. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Roy H. McDaniel.

Survivors include her husband, William J. Leathem; daughter and son-in-law, Mona and Mark Shea, Orlando; and grandchildren, Jace Shea and Jesse Shea. Funeral services will be today, August 10, 2004, in Orlando. Burial will be in Cowgill Cemetery, Polo, Missouri, at a later date. John Moore Mavis (West) Cain Mavis (West) Cain, 92, died peacefully at Christian Healthcare Nursing Home, in Springfield, on Sunday, August 8, 2004, where she had been a resident for the past 10 months.

Mavis was born on March 15, 1912, in. Fayetteville, North Carolina, to Novella and Herbert West. On December 29, 1935, she married Howard "Curly" Cain, and they lived in Fayetteville until moving to Springfield, in 1983 to be near their only daughter, Carolyn Hart, and grandsons, Jeffrey and Michael Hart. She and Curly adjusted quite readily to the Midwest and were always happy they had made the transition to be with the family they adored. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend.

Her sweet smile, mild manner and caring ways made people comfortable, drew them near her and led to a bounty of dear friends. Mavis was a of Camp Ground Methodist Church in Fayetteville, N.C. Her favorite pastime throughout the years was working in her flowers or vegetable garden. Mavis was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and six siblings. She is survived by daughter Carolyn; grandson, Jeffrey and wife, Hollie, of Charlotte, N.C.; grandson, Michael, of Winston Salem, sisterin-laws, Sabra West and Leone West; brother-in-law, Joe Yates; and numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

A special thanks to the staff and residents of Christian Health Care East Independent Living and Nursing Home for their care and friendships. Her services are under the care of Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held on Thursday at 11 a.m. in the National Cemetery with Dr. Gary Stratman officiating.

Nellie M. Rickman Nellie M. Rickman, 88, Springfield, passed away August 7, 2004, in St. John's Hospital. The daughter of A.C.

"Pete" and Pearl Lawson, she was born March 28, 1916, in Barry County, Mo. Nellie received her teaching certificate on August 31, 1937, and went on to get a master's degree. She taught in Barry and Greene County Public Schools, retiring in 1976. She did volunteer work at St. John's Hospital for 25 years.

She belonged to Schweitzer United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Rickman. Nellie is survived by a brother, William Lawson, of Michigan City, four nieces, five nephews and their families. Chapel services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, August 11, 2004, in Greenlawn Funeral Home South, with burial in Springfield National Cemetery, Glenstone and Seminole, under direction of Greenlawn South.

Visitation is today, August 10, from 5 to 7 p.m. in the funeral home at 441 W. Battlefield. Ruth Gripka Parker Ruth Gripka Parker 90, Carthage, passed away Monday August 9, 2004, at 2:45 a.m. at Joplin Health and Rehab Center, Joplin, Mo.

Ruth was born July 9, 1914, in Pierce City, to August Gripka and Martha Bruenn Gripka. She was a graduate of Pierce City High School moving to Carthage in 1933. She married Lemoyne P. Parker on August 31, 1935, in Lamar, he preceded her in death on March 21, 1972. She was a life-long member of St.

Ann's Catholic Church, Carthage, where she served on the Ladies' Altar Society. During her lifetime she was, a wife, mother of children, cook for St. Ann's Grade School, a factory worker, photo shop developer, McDonald's employee and bowled for many years on the Carthage and Joplin Bowling Leagues. Mrs. Parker is survived by six sons and their spouses, Father Carroll Parker OMI, Copenhagen, Denmark, Gale A.

Parker and wife, Loraine, Dallas, Texas, James L. Parker and wife, Judy, Springfield, Philip L. Parker, Carthage, Stephen G. Parker and wife, Eva, Carthage, and Lloyd F. Parker and wife, Janie, Joplin, two daughters and their spouses, Brenda P.

Stevenson and husband, Hal, Missouri City, Texas, and Joyce P. Redgrave and husband, Tim, Paris, France; 25 grandchildren; 25 great grandchildren; one sister, Dorothy Miller, age 95, Aurora, and one brothLawrence Gripka, age 87, Wentworth, Mo. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lemoyne Parker; one son, Don Parker; and five sisters and four brothers. A wake service and a rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Thursday August 12th at St.

Ann's Catholic Church, followed by a visitation. Funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. Friday August 13th in St. Ann's Catholic Church, Carthage, Mo. Father Carroll Parker and Father Bill Hodgson will officiate.

John was born in 1915 in Laclede County, to John K. Moore and Nova Hawkins Moore. John served in World War I1 in the Navy. He was employed with Frisco Railroad for many years and eventually retired from Reyco Manufacturing. He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter Carrol Taylor; sisters Ruby Caffey, Jewell Phillips, Mildred Moore, Beatrice Hopkins and Bonnie Ragland; brothers Paul Moore and Melvin Moore; and son-in-law WinWade.

stole is survived by wife Eunice Moore; daughter Donna Casteel and husband Robert; daughter Farrel Wade; brother Wayne Moore and wife Kathryn; grandsons John Taylor and David Wade; granddaughters Tammy Bass and Wendy Wade; greatgrandchildren Madison Taylor, Parker Taylor, Jordan Bass and Garren Wade; sonin-law Gene Taylor; brotherin-law. Don Ragland; and several nieces and nephews. John was a hard-working loving husband, father and grandfather. His bright smile and subtle demeanor will be greatly missed by all.
