Things to be popping again at old fairground, Leader says This Week In Springfield History lit One hundred years ago, 1894, the Springfield Fair Association filed articles of incorporation. The Springfield Leader observed that "the old fairground will once more blossom forth in popcorn, red lemonade and general hilarity." The recently organized Col. L.C. Campbell Camp of the ex-Confederates has been accepted into the Association of United Confederate Veterans. The Campbell Camp has about 51 members.

Saturday in Missouri Rehabilitation Center, Mount Vernon, following a short illness. He was a lifelong resident of the Everton community and a well-known farmer and stockman in Dade County. He was a member of Ray Spring Presbyterian Church, was saved at a young age, and tried to live a Christian life. He attended grade school in Ray Spring and graduated from Everton High School where he was active in basketball and baseball. He continued his interest in sports after graduation by following area basketball and baseball teams, especially the St.

Louis Cardinals. He was a World War II Army veteran, serving from 1941 to 1945, and was a charter member of Everton American Legion Post 443, where he recently received a 40-year membership certificate. He was also a longtime member of the Sinking Creek Cemetery Board. He was united in marriage on Feb. 9, 1944, to Lorraine Herlihy, and to this union was born one son.

James is survived by his wife, Lorraine, of the home; a son and his wife, Alan Lee and Tammy, Everton; two granddaughters, Jessica Anna and Jamie Lee, whom he called his little tykes; two aunts, Mrs. Doris Kil-lingsworth, Walnut Grove, and Mrs. Moffett Burton, Everton; one uncle, John Wright, Wichita, numerous cousins; and other family members. His gentle humor will be missed by all who knew him. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m.

Mattie was born Nov. 12, 1902, in Oklahoma Territory to Edwin and Lillian Templeton.

She was the sixth child of a family of four boys and four girls. In 1912, the family traveled by covered wagon to Diggins where they settled on a farm. She became a rural teacher, teaching at Bethel Hill and Liberty schools until her marriage In 1923 to Fred Byrd. They lived on a farm near Fordland and were the parents of three children. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1962.

Also preceding her in death were a great-grandson; three brothers, Harry, Elliot, and John Templeton; and three sisters, Carrie Davis, Faye Grigsby, and Ruth Rea-gor. Mattie was active with the youth in the community as a 4-H leader and as a Sunday school teacher in the Cass Chapel and Pleasant View communities. A self-taught pianist, she was accompanist for the Albert Kinser Quartet and the Kinser Singers. She was a member of Fordland Methodist Church and of Rebecca Lodge. She moved to Mt.

Vernon in 1970. In 1982, because of advanced Parkinson's Disease, she entered Maranatha, where she remained until her death. She is survived by two sons and their wives, Robert "Bob" and Betty Byrd, Lake Havasu, and Bill and Irene Byrd, Boca Raton, a daughter and her husband, Betty and Francis Snook, Newton, Iowa; a brother and his wife, Vernon and Marge Templeton, Atwater, Calif; fourteen grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday In Fordland Methodist Church with the Rev.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Ruth Anne O'Rourke. She is survived by her husband, Fred M.

Rosenberger, of the home; two daughters, Rebecca Anne Rosenberger, currently a student at William Jewell College, Liberty, and Christy Lynn Rosenberger, a student at Kickapoo High School; her father, Robert O'Rourke; a sister and her husband, Anne Lucille and Charles Nelson, all of Springfield; a sister, Patricia Lynn O'Rourke, St. Louis; four nephews; and five nieces.
