2B January 7, 1990 OZARKS The News-Leader Ex-Lambert Airport director to work for FAA Heart attack kills record-breaking transplant patient The Associated Press ST. LOUIS The former director of Lambert Airport in St Louis will start work Monday with the Federal Aviation Administration. Leonard Griggs, 58, was formally appointed Friday as the FAA's associate administrator for airports, FAA Chief James Busey announced. The new post will put him in charge of the federal government's $1.4 billion Airport Aid Program. He also will direct a variety of airport safety, planning, engineering and development programs.

"My main goal is to help enlarge and improve the nation's aviation facilities," Griggs said. Griggs will have a key voice in expansion proposals for Lambert in St Louis and Scott Air Force Base in nearby Belleville, 111. Griggs has said he is generally supportive of expansion, but he declined to comment on the expansion proposal at Lambert He also declined to discuss the proposal to expand Scott into a joint military-civilian use airport to relieve congestion at Lambert Griggs is a retired Air Force colonel. He was director of command and control at Scott Air Force Base before he came to St. Louis in 1977 to take the job as director of Lambert, which he held until 1987.

GETTING IT CORRECT The Associated Press ST. LOUIS A woman who set a record for living the longest on an artificial heart before receiving a heart transplant has died of a heart attack brought on by her battle against infection. Carolyn Stadler, 57, of St Charles died Friday at St. Louis University Hospital, where she had received two transplants, officials said. Stadler, the mother of four, lived 440 days on a Jarvik-7 artificial heart before receiving a heart transplant last fall Hospital officials said Stadler was kept alive by the Jarvik-7 after her body rejected a first donor heart given her June 30, 1988.

She had been diagnosed as having idiopathic cardiomyopathy, a degenerative heart condition. She spent the last l'i years at the hospital. Dr. Leslie Miller of the hospital's cardiology staff said Stadler's case provided much-needed information about reac tion to transplants. Women are more likely to reject heart transplants than men, Miller said.

The Jarvik-7 artificial heart was developed by Robert Jarvik at the University of Utah School of Medicine in Salt Lake City. It is capable of replacing the function of both of the heart's pumping chambers, the right and the left ventricles, and is intended to serve as a bridge while the patient awaits a donor heart The News-Leader strives (or accuracy and fairness.
