ft 4B News-Leader Wednesday, February 25, 1998 Page edited by Tracy Spurlock; call 836-1 199 after 5 p.m. onetfs skunk trapper has no shortage of business JBV Susan Wade tNews-Leader 10 skunks this year and is aware of four businesses that are infested. "I don't see how it will ever end unless we can trap every single solitary one of them. And I can't do that because I don't know where they are." Shirley Terry, co-owner of Terry's Outlet furniture store, knows where some of the furry critters are. The building she's occupied for four years was sprayed three times last year.

And a skunk blasted just outside the store last week. "Today I can't even be open," Terry said Tuesday. "It's so bad in here, there's no way anybody would even come in and stay and buy." Terry will keep the doors closed until she gets her merchandise moved into a new store on Broadway Street. She had already purchased the building, the latest skunk episode is just forcing her to move sooner. John Bruner, owner of Bruner's Pharmacy, has been more fortunate.

Though seven skunks have been trapped from under his store in the past year, the store has never been sprayed. Even so, there was a distinct aroma that hung about, he said. "We never closed our business and never even came close to closing our business," Bruner said. "It just wasn't that bad." In Christian County, Spokane Middle School wasn't so lucky. The odor emanating from beneath the floors was so offensive Monday, the school dismissed classes early.

Able knows just how bad the scent can be. "That stuff is like gas. It hangs in the air for days and days," he said. But Able has learned how to trap the animals without getting sprayed. "Some's harder to catch than others," he said.

"A young one you can usually catch. But an older one that's wiser, you have an awful time getting him in there." His secret to approaching trapped skunks involves peeking over the top of a vinyl table cloth that he carries spread out in front of him as he walks toward the trap. If the animal turns its back toward him and raises its tail, he backs off. If it doesn't, "I'll walk up slowly and drape that over his cage," Able said. "If he can't see anything to get scared of or upset about, then he won't spray." Well, make that less likely to spray.

Able has never been sprayed directly, but his table cloth has been. And that's enough to leave him reeking. Able said he'll put up with the stink because he knows most people in town appreciate what he does. And, in a way, the skunks provide job security. But "I think I prefer the dog and cat part of the job," Able said.

I People might think Abie's job stinks, and some days 41 does. "In the last four years, I've Itrapped 88 skunks," said the Monett jaramal control officer. "In '95, 1 got 55 Vone year." Most of the stinky critters Able pas trapped were living beneath busi-jrosses downtown on Main Street. And despite Abie's valiant efforts, if doesn't appear the problem will lend. Able has already trapped about Steward, Fordland, a retired hospital kitchen worker, died at 3:56 p.m.
