The company has been processing wire for about six months. The processor, recently used to eat up 32 miles of aluminum cables purchased from a utility company, also chews up 20,000 pounds of aluminum cable in a day. When finished, the nail-size pieces head for Reynolds Metals. They may be used to make aluminum foiL The bulk of Fauvergue's metal comes from industry and metal scrappers. The companies that discard their excess metal provide 40 percent of the scrap received.

Another 40 percent comes from the pounds. They'll head to Chaparral Steel a Texas mill that produces bar and structural steel products by recycling scrap. Pace Industries, a Harrison, company that makes automotive parts, and Briggs Stratton, the company known for its gasoline engines, use Twelfth Street's metal, too. In a pile at the bottom of the hill, there's an old aluminum canoe, stop sign and the block of a Mazda car engine that may some day be part of a Briggs Stratton engine. Broken aluminum equipment Is heated to 1,500 degrees Fahrenheit and melted into molds at Twelfth Street.

Stacks of the aluminum, magnesium and copper to be recycled. Sales from Fauvergue's largest scrap yard in Joplin and smaller ones in Miami, Independence. and Pittsburg, are expected to top $24 million this year. It's become a lucrative business, a long way from the days in the 1950s when Fauvergue's father, George, sold scrap steel for just $16 a ton. Now, a ton brings six times as much.

More than half the sales are generated from the Joplin location, con- structed in 1974. The metals sit in the yard, awaiting the attention of 26 workers. New metal arrives every day. On one side of the five-acre tract, recycled cans are smashed into 45-pound cubes and then shipped to aluminum can factories. People who contribute the cans get 42 cents a pound.

On another side of the yard, a crane operator maneuvers a giant claw to snatch broken kitchen appliances, old cars and other scrap steel and loads them into a shear baler. An old refrigerator or stove brings $3 for the person who takes it in. The baler presses steel into giant blocks weighing thousands of Altle Ellingsworth, 85 CRANE Services for Allie Ellingsworth, Crane, will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Manlove-Stumpff Funeral Home with burial in Crane Community Cemetery.
