The team will be given as much time as needed, he said. "We haven't put a timetable on it," he said. "It could be a day or two, or weeks." Because the explosion was in a building separated from other plant operations, other work at the plant will continue today, Fisher said. The explosion on Friday killed two employees. The investigating team is made up of Atlas employees and outside explosives experts, Fisher said. Company officials have been unable to contact the Occupational Safety and Health Administration about sending investigators, he said. "We have attempted to contact OSHA and have not been able to." The agency will be contacted today, he said. Fisher said the blast investigation team was waiting for one mem ber to arrive later Sunday before starting its work.

The team will center its investigation on the cast primer operation where an explosion Friday killed two workers. The dead men were identified as Thomas Walters, 43, Joplin, and James Kelly, 33, Carthage. Six other workers were injured in the explosion that took place outside the buiding. The fatal explosion was the second at the plant this year. On March 22, an explosion in a reactor building where ammonium nitrate is made injured two workers.

Friday's explosion occurred when employees were pouring a molten blasting agent known as Pentolite into a mold, company officials said. Fisher said Sunday a determination of what caused the explosion will depend on what the investiga By Sara B. Hansen Our BransonLakes Bureau GALENA Jury trial for a Lampe man charged with first-degree murder is scheduled to begin today in Stone County Circuit Court. Marvin Yocum, 45, will face charges of first-degree murder and armed criminal action in connection with the Jan. 6 shooting death of Larry Dale Gideon at Betty's Tavern in Reeds Spring.

Stone County Prosecutor Mark Rundel is seeking the death penalty in the case. The only other penalty for a first-degree murder conviction is life in prison without parole. Yocum, who is represented by Springfield attorney Devon Sherwood, is free on $125,000 bond. Witnesses testified during a preliminary hearing in February that they saw Yocum shoot Gideon, 35, of Reeds Spring, several times while in the tavern. Dr.

James Banner, who performed the autopsy, testified Gideon was shot five times. Three bullets went through his body and two remained lodged in his upper body. The fatal bullet entered Gideon's back and went through his left lung, Banner said. Regina Lynn Marshall of Aurora, who went to the tavern with Yocum, testified at the hearing that Yocum was mad because Gideon had been staring at him. Gideon also had stared at other people in the bar, she said.

Sherwood declined to discuss his strategy for the trial, but said his client acted in self-defense. Sherwood anticipates the trial will take at least three days. Efforts to reach Rundel Sunday for comment were unsuccessful. The trial had been scheduled for June 13, but was postponed to August because of the Stone County Fair. Holding the jury trial at the same time as the fair would have triggered security risks and parking problems for the 36 potential jurors, Rundel earlier said.

The carnival was set up on three sides of the courthouse and booths and other fair events are on the fourth side, leaving no parking. The News-Leader strives for accuracy and fairness. Obituaries CountryQuilts, cabinets sell at Springfield antique show Si FROM PAGE IB Vince Augenstein of Stockton has found that certain colors, as well as certain items, are popular. Green is the "in" color, Augenstein said. "Last year, it was blue," Augenstein said. "This year, it is green.

Everything is going to green." Although some items rise and fall in popularity, other items, such as jewelry, retain their appeal. "People ask for the items they are most interested in, and I have sold quite a bit of jewelry," said Iris May of Springfield. Low-priced items also continue to sell well. People who come to antique shows are bargain hunters, said Jean Anderson of Ozark. "People like anything that's cheap until you get to the real collectors," Anderson said.

"They are the ones who have studied and are willing to pay." People who want to become collectors should start with good antiques, Anderson said. "The value is always there, and it is going to increase," she said. The show, which started Saturday, attracted 70 dealers, most of them from the Midwest. The Springfield Collectors Club holds two antique shows a year to raise money for charities. In 1988, the club donated $11,200 to Springfield area organizations.

The club's executive board will decide which charities will receive proceeds from the weekend show, club president Frances Sutter said. Eleven people started the club in 1971. The members meet once a month for programs on antiques. The club's 1989 spring show will be March 24-25 at the University Plaza Trade Center. "It grows on you," Sutter said.

"You become addicted." K.C. police double arrests for domestic violence The Associated Press KANSAS CITY Kansas City police are arresting more than twice as many people for domestic violence this year since adopting a more active policy to deal with family abuse. Lt. Col. Richard Fletcher, head of the police investigative bureau, said Saturday that officers are averaging 450 arrests a month for domestic assault, up from an average 178 arrests before the new policy.

The Kansas City policy, which preceded a similar new law to go into effect across Missouri this month, allows police to initiate a charge of assault without requiring the victim to sign a complaint. KillingFour charged with murder FROM PAGE 1B Beckwith was traveling through Montana after leaving Iowa, where he had visited relatives. "He met them on the highway and hooked up with them," Thompson said. "He befriended them and they killed him. I have no explanation for it, other than they wanted his money." Beckwith was killed between Winston and Townsend, at a scenic turnout near Canyon Ferry Lake, Thompson said: "The mountains are in the background, and the lake's right there.

It's really a pretty place." The killer fired five shots from a revolver and stole $200 and some traveler's checks. Beckwith's body was found the morning of July 25. Two hours earlier, his truck was found burning near Dillon, about 150 miles distant. A nationwide police bulletin has been issued for Milinovich and Duncan. Thompson said his only concern now is arresting the two men, one of whom allegedly fired the fatal shots.

"Sooner or later, they'll turn up," Thompson said. "I just hope it's sooner. I want to get them off the road before they do this to someone else." his wife Delia Warinner, Springfield, one son W.R. Palmer Jr, Altha, two grandsons; and a great-grandchild. Services will be at 7 p.m.
