2b Wednesday, September 7, 1988 OZARKS The News-Leader Wilson's Creek bridge work to begin Convicted Jury wants 73 years in officer's shooting FROM PAGE 1B "The jury obviously didn't believe him," Webb said. "We showed that he returned to a city where he knew he was wanted armed with a loaded shotgun. It was clear he would do anything to keep from being arrested." After the shooting, Shaw again abandoned Bonine and her children. Authorities began a two-day manhunt for Shaw. He stole a pickup truck, was chased by police, and crashed into a police car at a roadblock in neighboring Carroll County, injuring a police officer.

He ran from the scene. The manhunt ended the next day when he stole another vehicle and drove into the hands of officers waiting at another roadblock. The combination of fleeing from Snavely and fleeing during the chase resulted in a felony fleeing charge. The jury recommended a six-year sentence. Possession of the shotgun netted start later this week.

The project should take about three months to complete, he said. Burk, however, said the short work week caused by the Labor Day holiday means work won't start until next week. After erecting construction signs, the bridge crew will start to dismantle the old bridge, he said. Initial work will involve removing the bridge's concrete floor, he said. Then, the ironwork will be dismantled, he said.

"We'll probably just basically cut it to pieces," Burk said of the old bridge's fate. The bridge was closed in April after it was discovered it was structurally unsound. The bridge serves an area just north of Wilson's Creek National Battlefield. After the old bridge is removed, piers will be constructed for the new bridge, Burk said, The new bridge will consist of a series of 60-footlong pre-stressed concrete girders, he said. Clark said the 350-foot long, 24-foot wide, two-lane bridge will have a load capacity of 40 tons.

The new bridge will eliminate lengthy detours for area residents, Clark said. "It's very inconvenient to the residents of this area, and we've pushed this project right on through," he said of efforts to get the project started. Since work on the bridge will take place during the fall and winter months, weather will be a major factor when it comes to a completion date, Burk said. "It depends a lot on the weather," he said. "For public information, we're saying next spring." MurderSon charged in Camdenton have been interviewed." Whitten declined to say whether the two suspects had confessed to any involvement in the killing.

He also declined to discuss a possible motive for the killing. "We generally do have a motive in most cases, but we have to be very careful about what we release without jeopardizing the case. That sets us up for a change of venue," the sheriff said. "In this case we do have a motive, but we won't release it." Whitten said the investigation into the killing was difficult because George Willie was a controversial person and several people qualified as suspects. "Let me just say he had a colorful background," Whitten said.

"When this happened, we did a psychological profile on (George) Willie, and we sent it to the FBI in Quantico, hoping they could give us back a profile of the suspect. They said, 'We can't help you. He was too high of a trial date Karchmer's attorney, Steven D. Brown, said at the hearing the government has not yet provided Karchmer with its samples so that Karchmer also can have them tested. Attorneys were scheduled to confer about the matter today.

A grand jury indicted Commercial Metals Karchmer's owner; James Vermillion of Springfield, the current local manager; and Harold Belcher, an Oklahoma resident, the former local assistant manager. After the indictment was issued a company spokesman said indepen By Mike Penprase The News-Leader Work on replacing the old Wilson's Creek Bridge with a modern structure should begin next week, an official with the company that will do the work said Tuesday. The turn-of-the-century iron bridge that has crossed the river at Farm Road 182 north of Wilson's Creek National Battlefield since the 1920s will be dismantled and scrapped, Burk Bridge Co. vice president Larry Burk said. In late August, the Springfield firm submitted a low bid of $314,001.35 to the Greene County Commission to dismantle the old one-lane bridge and build a new structure.

Greene County road and bridge administrator Clifford Clark said after the Greene County Commission met Tuesday that work should DAILY RECORD BIRTHS ASH, Kelly and Jean (Hill), 2608 W. Blackburn, a girl, 4:51 a.m. Aug. 5, Cox South. BARKER, Carl and Cindy, Lebanon, a boy, 12:30 p.m.

His obituary listed his son, his parents and a brother as his only survivors. Authorities estimated George Willie died sometime between 8 p.m. April 22 and 1 a.m. April 23, 1985. He had received multiple knife wounds to his chest.

His body was found about 5:30 a.m. April 23 by a city work crew. Whitten said his department has invested about 3,500 to 4,000 working hours in what he characterized as a "tough case." In addition to statements from the two suspects, officers also have a small amount of physical evidence. The sheriff said no further arrests are expected in the case. "We never gave up.

It feels good to have charges filed," Whitten said. "We feel we owe it to the victim of any murder to do everything in our power to get the person who did it." pending dent tests failed to confirm the charges. The younger Willie and Campbell became suspects within a few days of the killing, the sheriff said. "As happens in so many cases, we kept digging," he said. "These two guys were never eliminated as suspects.

We just didn't have proof. We needed a lead." The first good lead in the three year-old case came in February, Whitten said. Since then officers with the sheriffs department and the Missouri State Highway Patrol have followed leads on suspects and witnesses from Camp Pendleton, to Biloxi, to Okinawa, Japan. Last week, a Camden County officer went to Mount Fuji, Japan, to finalize the case, Whitten said. "We got information we did not have before," he said.
